The Coach House: A Bold Revival of a Historic Stable Block in West Sussex

Just outside Petworth in the heart of the West Sussex countryside, a forgotten stable block has been reimagined as The Coach House - a richly layered, character-driven home that blends heritage with modern vibrancy. The thoughtful conversion preserves the building’s historic charm, including its original clock tower, while breathing new life into its interiors through curated design, bold colour, and layered texture.

We embraced the building’s past, cladding the living and dining areas in tongue& groove panelling, a respectful nod to the property’s equestrian history. A confident mix of colour, pattern, and period references that creates both comfort and intrigue. The living room is anchored by a fire surround and complimented by the pair of French doors dressed in ‘handed’ single curtains, visually expanding the space while adding timeless elegance. A statement ottoman serves as both footrest and for display, enhancing the room’s relaxed functionality.

In the kitchen, built-in bench seating, spindle-back chairs, and a polished antique table create a warm, casual dining zone. Above, a Verner Panton pendant adds a playful mid-century twist. The palette; mustard yellow, true blue, and wine red - strikes an unexpected balance, while café-style sheers at the window bring softness and privacy. Upstairs, each of the three bedrooms carries its own identity while remaining part of a cohesive whole. The master features dramatic wall murals, the second is softened with a delicate wildflower wallpaper by Barney Gates, and the third plays with bold green and blue hues, grounded by floral cushions in a classic Jean Monro print.
